Concurso Del Doble Ocho, tango music competition


Rules 
1. Participants and nationality:  Participation in the Concurso Del Ocho (also referred to as the Ocho) is open for composers, musicians, poets and singers of all nationalities. 


2. Status : Participation in the Ocho is restricted to amateur and semi professional artists. Amateur and semi professional artists are defined as artists of whom is known that their income from performances, CD's and royalties is less than 50% of their total income. The Doble Ocho festival organization and/or the jury can, in case of doubt, request that participants validates their status.

 

2.Status of participant
Participating in the Ocho is restricted to amateur, music students and semi professional artists.
Amateurs are defined as musicians, who:
- never studied at a music conservatory (or music school of a comparable level) and who earn less than 30% of their total income as a consequence of musical activities or performances
Music students are defined as musicians, who:
- studied or still study at a music conservatory (or a music school with a comparable level) and who earn less than 50% of their income as a consequence of musical activities or performances
Semi profesionals are musicians, who:
- earn at least 50% of their income in tango and who have not yet become generally known (as can be shown by the number of performances they have every year and the venues where these performances are held).


The Doble Ocho organisation will judge in each individual case, whether the category  a participant is registered for is correct, and if not: place
a participant in another category. The Doble Ocho festival organisation and/or the jury can, in case of doubt, request that participants validate

 their status.

3. Purpose : The Ocho's purpose is to stimulate amateur, music students and semi professional artists with an affinity for tangomusic, to compose (at least one) new tango composition or to interpret an existing tango composition (cover). It is advisable to make a danceable new arrangement. also : The concurso want's to stimulate and discover new musical  talent and offer a podium for this talent and possibillities for a breakthrough in the professional circuit. Also the Concurso want's to be a meeting place for musicians worldwide, podium programmers, festival directors and musiclabels and ofcourse tangodance and music lovers. With the professional jury the Concurso stands for quality and realises a selection in tangogroups and musicians.


4. Cover version : The Doble Ocho festival organization decides which song is to be covered for the Concurso Del Ocho and provides the music. 


5. Tango music : The term tango music may be interpreted in the broadest sense of the word: traditional dance music, tango nuevo, neotango, tango cancion, tango concertante, etc. Besides tango (as a genre) also milonga, valse, candombe, canyengue, tango milonga and other genres are permitted, 


6. Instruments: No restrictions.
7. Language ": No restrictions.


8. International jury : The compositions which are offered by the participants will be judged by an international jury, which is selected by the Doble Ocho festival organization. The jury will give participants constructive feedback on composition, musical skills and performance, and also will provide a jury report


9. Pre election : The judging of the new arrangements takes place in two phases. 
- A pre-selection based on the arrangements that are send in before march 15. In this pre-selection the jury selects the finalists

- The actual live performance of the new arrangement on friday april 10 2009, after which the jury will decide on who is the winner. The winner is entitled to perform for a maximum of 45 minutes during the festivals' fridaynight milonga.


10. Soundsystem :  The Doble Ocho festival organization provides, if necessary and if possible, the sound system; such as monitors, cables, mixing console, loudspeakers, microphones and the like.


11. The pre election will take place on basis of a recording of the new arrangement supplied by the participants before march 15. This recording is preferably a digital recording, such as audio CD, mp3, wav or else. In case of doubt, consult the Doble Ocho festival organisation.

13. Copyright : The copyrights of the composition will remain at all times in possession of the composer(s). 


14. Entry fee : There is an entry fee of EUR 75,- per act. ( FREE FOR STUDENTS !) In exchange for this the participants will receive five tickets for the friday night milonga (each ticket is EUR 15,-). The finalists will also receive 2 free tickets for the Friday night.


15. Account number  :  The entry fee has to be transferred to Stichting Ultimo Tango before march 15st 2009.

You will receive a code. We need that code to collect the money. Please mail the code to tango@dds.nl (Lucien Lecarme) and refer to Doble Ocho 2008 and name of the orchestra.

We will confirm your participation in the Ocho via e-mail, after having collected the money. When the organization has received the entry fee and the recording, the participation in the Ocho pre-election is guaranteed.
16. Quality : In case of too few participants or too low quality of the acts, the jury or the festival organization can decide to select no winner at all. In the opposite case the jury can decide to nominate more winners or a winner and a runner up, who will share the prize.


17. Non regulated situations : In all cases to which this set of rules do not apply, the Doble Ocho festival organization will decide, to which no appeal is possible.


18. No correspondence : There will be no correspondence about about the judging process and the results.

The admission period is from november 1st, 2008 untill march 15 2009. 


20. Alteration of rules : The Doble Ocho festival organization has the right to change the rules for the Concurso Del Doble Ocho. If so, this will be communicated (via festival site www.doble-ocho.com) before the admission period starts or directly per email after having received your material.
